Go Green At School With Your Kids

Kids learn how to care for the environment by watching the grown-ups around them. When you're helping your child get ready for school, show them how small, everyday decisions can make a difference – a big difference. To help you get started, appleofmyi has put together this list of our favourite ideas. Each one is small, but can add up. And don't stop there! Involve your children and see what other ideas those creative young minds can come up with.

A good reusable lunch box or bag eliminates the need to waste 180, or more, brown paper bags over the course of a school year. Plus, the insulation helps keep food fresh.

Be sure to pack two cloth napkins – one can be used as a placemat to keep food off dirty lunch tables.

Use reusable storage containers to pack sandwiches, snacks or leftovers. This will save hundreds of plastic bags per child, per year from winding up in landfills.

Make sure you use a reusable bottle rather than juice boxes or plastic water bottles.

Pack fresh fruit like apples, bananas and oranges for snacks because they need no wrap at all – nature has provided it already

Get rid of the screensaver – it's a tremendous waste of energy. Teach your child to turn off the monitor every time he or she leaves the workspace.

Place the desk near a window so it's well-lit by pleasing natural light during the day.

Replace the lamp bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb. One 25-watt CFL uses a third of the energy of a regular 75-watt bulb and lasts 10 times longer.

Put a bin or basket on the floor lined with a paper grocery bag and encourage your child to put all used paper in it. Then it's easy to lift the bag out and put it out for recycling – a job that's suitable for a child as young as four.

Post a chalkboard or whiteboard nearby and use it for messages and notes rather than paper.

Make it easy to recycle and put a basket on kids' desks for used computer paper.

Encourage your child to use the reverse side of for writing, doodling and drawing.

Use both sides of the paper for artwork. Parents may be able to bring home paper from the office that's printed on only one side for artwork.
