Making "Healthy'' Junk Food

Who hasn't succumbed to sinful junk food cravings once in a while? Children especially love their sugar high and carb punch. Moms all over the world have quite a task trying to keep their children away from junk foods. But we have a better idea – if you can't beat them, join them, but with healthier options!

So here are some simple alternatives to junk, which not only taste as good but are nutritious and healthy too!

Satisfy your craving for chocolates with organic dark vegan chocolate. Melt some in a double boiler or microwave and dip fruit (strawberries, cherries, bananas, apples, pears, mango slices...let your fantasies loose here!) for a chocolicious healthy treat.

If you get that old urge for potato chips and dip while watching that old rerun on TV, consider low-fat brown rice crackers or rice chips or pretzels dipped into hummus or home-made guacamole. Add some celery and carrot sticks to really increase the nutritional punch.

Pizzas loaded with cheese and fats are sinful…but you can make your own pizza at home with a whole grain crust, available at the health food market. Or try fusion, and bake toppings of your choice on a left over roti!

I love fizzy drinks, there's nothing like a bit of fizz to wash down the salt and grease of a pizza or burger, is there?

Here's what to do:

Give your children a fresh lime soda instead, or a fizzy home made ginger ale. Another option – add soda to some plain fruit juice…

Ice cream is something all kids love. Here are some healthy options:

Freeze a ripe banana or a handful of grapes for a cool and refreshing natural dessert. Or experiment with sorbets and frozen fruit juice slush.
